Great question! Adopt a Pet is a life-saving website and service that connects good people (like you) with great pets in need of loving homes across the U.S. and Canada. Adopt a Pet does not house and care for the adorable pets you see on our site (even though we wish we could!); they are housed, cared for, and available for adoption through one of the following entities:
1. Animal Welfare Organizations:
At Adopt a Pet we're fortunate to list pets from over 15,000 animal welfare organizations and help support their biggest life-saving initiative—their adoption program!
Fun Fact: Animal welfare organizations include city and county animal care & control agencies and shelters, and private nonprofit organizations such as Humane Societies, SPCAs, and foster-based rescues.
2. Families who need to rehome their pet (private owner listings):
Families in the unfortunate situation of needing to find another loving home for their pet use our Rehome by Adopt a Pet service to transition their pet directly from their home to their pet's new home. By proactively rehoming (along with your help!), they spare their pet the potential stress, anxiety, and uncertainty of being in a shelter setting.
Fun Fact: Rehoming is not only better for pets, but also for animal welfare organizations, as many overburdened and underfunded shelters are unable to take in every pet that needs them, and/or provide a positive outcome for every pet in their care.
From all of us at Adopt a Pet, thank you for adopting! No matter if you adopt from a shelter/rescue or a private family, you are saving a life!
