Navigating the adoption process can be challenging at times, but saving a life is incredibly rewarding (and so worth it!). Here are some things to keep in mind on your journey to adopt a new furry friend!
-
Finding the right pet (for you) isn't always easy. There are many different types of pets available for adoption, and it can be difficult to find the right one for your lifestyle. It's important to consider factors such as your budget, activity level, free time, and living situation when choosing a pet. Adding a new pet to your family is a commitment, be sure you can dedicate the time and resources to provide your new pet with a safe and loving home.
- Start your search early and be patient. The adoption process takes time and you may have to submit multiple applications before getting approved. Don't be discouraged, this is just part of the process! Keep checking Adopt a Pet and visiting shelters/rescues until you find the right furry friend for you!
-
Meeting adoption requirements may be harder than you think. Some shelters and rescue organizations have strict adoption requirements, which may include a background check, a home visit, proof of income, and/or a fenced yard for certain pets. Be mindful that every organization's adoption requirements are different, however, as a general rule of thumb, shelters may be less stringent than rescue organizations.
- When you visit a shelter or rescue organization, be ready and prepared to answer questions about your lifestyle, home, and experience with pets. This will help the staff match you with the right pet for your family.
- Being in the know on adoption fees helps alleviate frustration. Adoption fees can vary drastically depending on the type of pet you're interested in and the organization you adopt from.
- Not so Fun Fact: Most adoption fees don't even cover the necessary medical care pets receive by the shelter/rescue, such as spaying/neutering, vaccinations, and microchipping.
Now that you have an idea what to expect (it's a marathon not a sprint!), we have no doubt you'll find the right pet to add to your family. Stay the course and be encouraged! New furry friends can provide companionship, love, and support for years to come, not to mention, help reduce stress and improve our overall health and well-being.
Happy adopting!
